Before the advent of settlers, the land now known as Heuvelton was home to the indigenous Oswegatchie tribe, whose ancient presence imbued the landscape with a rich tapestry of culture and heritage. As pioneers began to carve out their place in the wilderness, the settlement that would later blossom into Heuvelton bore the name “Fordsburgh,” a tribute to Nathan Ford, a pivotal figure recognized as the “Father of St. Lawrence County.” Ford, whose influence stretched from Ogdensburg to the burgeoning village, played a key role in fostering early development in the area.
Initially dubbed “East Branch” due to its proximity to the eastern branch of the Oswegatchie River, the settlement underwent a transformative shift in 1832. It was then that the name “Heuvelton” was adopted, honoring Jacob Van den Heuvel, an enterprising immigrant from the Netherlands. Van den Heuvel’s investments, including the construction of mills, heralded the dawn of economic prosperity in the fledgling community, laying the foundation for future growth and prosperity.
In 1876, another chapter in Heuvelton’s history unfolded with the founding of the McCadam Cheese Company by William McCadam. This venture not only brought economic opportunities to the town but also left an indelible mark on its cultural landscape. While the packaging plant has since closed its doors, the legacy of McCadam Cheese endures as a testament to Heuvelton’s entrepreneurial spirit and resilience.
